What we do
Google ranks pages, not websites, and all a page has earned belongs to its address. So every old URL with traffic, links or search history gets one permanent redirect, in one hop, to the page that answers the same question. Not everything to the home page, and nothing left to die. Things that truly no longer exist say so clearly.
When Tannadice Motors moved to a new 1,483-page site, all 1,478 of its old addresses were accounted for before the switch. When MyFootballFacts moved servers, 91,318 image files and every contact-form submission came across with zero errors. A migration is only done when nothing was lost.
We rebuilt purpleimp.com in September 2026 with a full redirect map, and still missed things: Google reading a sitemap that no longer existed, a few old addresses caught by a new page pattern, every page answering at two addresses. We found them in Search Console within days and fixed them in one; the map now covers 150 old addresses. That’s why we don’t stop at the redirect map.
The weeks after a switch are when problems show. We watch Search Console’s indexing reports weekly, replace the old sitemap with the new one, ask Google to recrawl the pages that matter, and tell Bing straight away, until the new site has caught up with the old one.

Not if the move is planned. A little movement for a few weeks is normal; a steady fall isn’t, and it almost always means old addresses were missed.
It’s the same principle with higher stakes: every page on the old domain redirects to its match on the new one, and Google is told about the move in Search Console. Keep the old domain registered for years afterwards.
